I’m your British accent coach based in London.

  • Qualified: I have a first-class BA(Hons) degree in languages, an MA in acting, a CELTA for teaching English, and the International Phonetic Association (IPA) Certificate.

  • Professional: I’m a member of the International Phonetic Association.

  • Experienced: I’ve been teaching pronunciation for over a decade. In that time, I’ve taught students from 90 countries. I also lecture at the Summer Course in English Phonetics at University College London (UCL).

I created this course because I was frustrated at the lack of high-quality and accurate teaching materials for contemporary British English pronunciation.

"I shall be recommending this course to all my students."

I have been studying English for many years and I use it every single day for work; accent-wise, however, I always struggled to fill the gap between a good foreign speaker and a native. This course is simply amazing and it’s truly bringing my pronunciation to a level I had never been able to reach before: the materials are clear, well organised, brand new in their approach and ultimately very effective. Definitely recommended!

FAQ

FAQ
Most people make improvements within 3 months.

The amount of time you need depends on several factors, such as your current level, your native language, how quickly you learn and how often you practise.

The course is organised according to what will make the biggest differences first, so you don’t have to complete the whole course to make improvements.

Some students just need a few months, whereas others have been on the course for multiple years because they continue to get value out of it (e.g. from the live online classroom sessions and the new material I publish).

You can see the number of lessons and the subject matter by signing up for the course (no credit card required) and then going to the homepage. The lessons are different depending on your native language.

1. Come to my classes.

As part of the course, I offer live support and 1–1 coaching in my group classes. Ask questions, get feedback, or simply observe me coaching other students and learn. Classes usually take place once a week at either 11am or 5pm (UK times). More information can be found here.

2. Get an assessment.

I’ll assess your accent and walk you through the priorities in the course. Afterwards, I’ll send you a PDF with advice and guidance about what to study. More information and pricing can be found here.

3. Give yourself feedback.

At the beginning of the course, you record a text which contains all the sounds in English. This acts as a benchmark recording. You can re-record the text after spending some time in the course to measure your improvement.

My course uses a sense-based approach: for each new vowel or consonant, we explore how it feels in the mouth, what it looks like in the mirror, and how it sounds. This trains you to understand whether you are making a sound accurately or not.

Additionally, there are games that train and test your learning.

Yes, you can get a certificate of completion when you finish all the lessons. Email me once you have completed the course and I’ll send it. It can also be posted on your LinkedIn profile!

Depending on the subscription plan you choose, you’ll pay every month or every year.

  • You can pay using a credit/debit card or PayPal.
  • You can cancel easily at any time.

The annual plan is better value and reflects a realistic commitment to your studies. Many students find that they want to stay in the course for a year to keep learning and keep their skills sharp.

You can switch to a different subscription plan by following these steps: (1) cancel your current subscription, (2) wait until it expires, (3) subscribe to a new plan.

Is your employer paying for the course? If they require an invoice/alternative payment method, please find information here.

If you complete over 10% of the course and you decide it’s not right for you, I will give you a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Simply send me an email: luke@improveyouraccent.co.uk. I ask that you complete at least 10% so that you have the chance to try different parts of the course and see the benefits.

Bear in mind that it can take some time to improve your pronunciation. The course gives you all the tools you need, but you may not see immediate results. Most students make improvements within 3 months of study.

If you asked how to get to London, the answer would be different depending on whether you are in Beijing or Paris. Similarly, the journey to improve your English pronunciation will be different depending on your native language.

Your native language has a sound system that is different from the sound system of English. It is also different from the sound systems of other languages.

This means that a Mandarin speaker will have different challenges compared to a French speaker when learning English pronunciation.

That’s why the lessons are designed according to your native language. They prioritise improving your intelligibility (i.e. people understanding you) and reducing the impression of a “foreign accent”. The lessons also include comparisons with words and sounds in your native language to help you understand why you pronounce English in a certain way.

I’ve been teaching pronunciation for over a decade – to students from 90 countries across the world. This experience has led me to understand the different problems that different speakers face.

Every language has variation (e.g. there are many varieties of Arabic). However, all speakers of a language will usually have similar challenges when approaching English. In the course, I’ve made reference to specific varieties when necessary (e.g. a sound that is more important for Brazilian Portuguese speakers to learn rather than European Portuguese speakers). In the course for Chinese learners, references are made to Mandarin and Cantonese.

There are tailored lessons for speakers of the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian/European), Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

If your language isn’t listed when signing up, choose the my language isn’t listed option when signing up and you’ll get a course which covers the major topics of English pronunciation that most English learners have problems with.

The course (Improve Your Accent by Luke Nicholson) is the best British English pronunciation course. It was designed and built from scratch specifically for learning English pronunciation and uses a tried-and-tested method. It also reached the finals of a prestigious British Council award.

You won’t find all of the following in other courses:

  • Lessons designed according to your native language.
  • Speech muscle training.
  • 1–1 feedback in online classes.
  • Modern British English pronunciation (vowels, consonants, rhythm, intonation and connected speech processes).
  • Ear training and other games.
  • Animations (to show you how sounds are made inside the mouth).
  • Click-for-IPA function (reveal phonetic transcription instantly by clicking the course’s “IPA button”).
  • Audio speed controls (you can slow down audio to help you hear sounds more easily).
  • Muscle settings (exploring the overall sound of your voice and how you hold your speech muscles).
  • A sense-based approach to learning (for each new vowel or consonant, we explore how it feels in the mouth, what it looks like in the mirror, and how it sounds – this allows you to learn quickly and accurately).
  • A community platform to interact with me and other students.
