Accent Reduction for Hindi Speakers
5 English pronunciation tips for Hindi speakers who want to improve their English accent:
1) /w/ and /v/
- W is made with the lips rounding (like a /u:/ sound)
- V is made with the bottom lip touching the upper front teeth.
-
- wine – vine
- while – vile
- wow – vow
2) R
- R is made with the tip of the tongue curling back in the mouth. We don’t touch the top of our mouths when pronouncing a R sound in English.
- We only pronounce a R sound when there is a vowel sound after it: Really, Tree, Carry
- We don’t pronounce a R sound when there is no vowel sound after it: Car, Learn, Here
3) TH
- This sound is made by putting the tip of the tongue by the back of the upper front teeth.
- Keep the tip of the tongue relaxed.
- Compare:
- T – tin – thin
- D – den – then
- F – fin – thin
- V – van – than
4) T + D
- These sounds are made with the tongue touching just behind the upper front teeth.
- They are not made by curling the tongue backwards and touching the back of the tongue to the top of the mouth!
5) The “o” Vowels
- Notice the difference between the ‘o’ sound in:
- Long Moving Vowel /əʊ/ – go, no, so
- Short Steady Vowel /ɒ/- dog, not, hot
- Long Steady Vowel /ɔː/- door, core, four
